The beginnings of the tournament
The Roland Garros tournament is one of the most prestigious events in tennis and is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments which includes the Australian Open, Wimbledon, US Open and the Roland Garros tournament.
In 1891, the tournament was established as France’s national tennis championship and was restricted to members of French tennis clubs.
The matches were played at the time on grass pitches.
In 1928, the tournament moved from its original location to its current location, in Paris, in the Porte d’Auteuil district.
The Roland Garros stadium was inaugurated that year. It takes its name from the French aviator Roland Garros, hero of the First World War.
It has since been the scene of some of the most incredible moments in tennis history.
Memorable matches
Sometimes considered the most physically demanding tournament in tennis, the tournament has seen many great champions over the years.
Among the most iconic names is Rafael Nadal, who holds the all-time record for men’s singles victories with fourteen titles to his credit.
Chris Evert and Steffi Graf dominate women’s tennis with seven and six titles respectively.
One of the most memorable duels in Roland Garros history is the rivalry between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
The two players have met several times in the final of the tournament, providing epic matches and spectacular rallies.
Another example is the epic 1984 final between Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe, which lasted over four hours and ended in victory for Lendl.
Or Gustavo Kuerten‘s surprise victory in 1997, which marked the start of an exceptional career for the Brazilian player, or Michael Chang‘s victory against Lendl in 1989.
