Who would have thought that a space engineer specializing in solar panels and working for Space X would one day become a talented cabinetmaker? Yet this is the story of Brian Ignaut founder of the company Degrees of Freedom.
A few years ago, Brian, on a trip to Italy, was walking in Venice and came across a carpentry at a bend in the street. Passionate about woodworking and intrigued, he crossed the threshold of the door. While talking with the owner, Tom Adams, he discovered that they shared the same fascination for the ancient Japanese art, Origami. One thing led to another, so they started to work together… And this is how the first concept of folding furniture inspired by origami emerged! Sure of his idea and its commercial potential, Brian took 3 months off to devote himself entirely to his new project. Thus, in July 2018, Brian decided to create his own company Degrees of Freedom which develops and markets furniture and home products inspired by origami.
Folding furniture like no other
Origami is the traditional art of paper folding. It would be of Chinese origin but it was the Japanese who popularized it and gave it its letters of nobility. Today, many artists are inspired by this fascinating art. Whether in fashion, architecture, art or furniture. Like Brian Ignaut who decided to create trendy furniture based on the concept of origami. His goal is to create design but also practical furniture that can be stored anywhere without taking up space.
Folding furniture, a minimalist trend
Have you ever heard of the minimalist trend? The minimalist advocates a simple and refined way of life in order to fight in particular against overconsumption. This consists in going to the essential. By saving space, folding furniture is an essential asset for the implementation of this type of decoration. It makes it possible to design layouts with a minimalist tendency while maintaining a minimum of practicality and comfort. Once the furniture is used, all you have to do is put it away to clear the space.
